Reinforcing Positive Self-Talk For a Positive and Fulfilling Life

Self-talk is the internal dialogue that happens within you, and it has a major influence on the subconscious mind, which reveals thoughts, beliefs, questions, and ideas. Self-talk can both be negative and positive and encouraging and discouraging. Indeed, improving self-talk is key to living a healthier and more fulfilling life. For sure, replacing the inner smack talk with encouraging self-talk will help you to better handle adversity and challenges. Therefore, small linguistic changes can result in significant life changes. As such, below, we have shared 5 tips to improve your self-talk.

Listen Critically to Your Inner Critic

Inner critic refers to that inner voice that judges criticizes, or demeans you. Indeed, in high-pressure situations, self-talk is critical since your inner voices are a reflection of your emotion, which influence behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, and habits. Therefore, to improve self-talk, you must first critically listen or give undivided attention to what you are saying to yourself. For instance, when you notice that your inner voices are shifting in an uncontrolled manner with words of disdain and discouragement, pause the conversation and consider ways to change it.

Create a Psychological Third Person from Yourself

Using first-person phrasing, such as “How can I stop stressing?” may trigger feelings of shame and anxiety. Instead, use your name as a second-person pronoun or a third-person pronoun when referring to your situation. For instance, ask yourself, “Why are you feeling so low?”. Such questions help to create the psychological distance to regulate emotion and reduce the feelings of discomfort. Therefore, if you consistently use your name you will boost your awareness and improve your self-talk over time.

Treat Yourself as a Friend

Additionally, you should always speak compassionately to yourself as you would to a friend. For sure, you can become your own cheerleader by reducing belittling, disapproving, and negative self-talk. You should rewrite the negative messages that are playing on the screen of your mind to include a positive touch. For instance, “I failed and embarrassed myself,” can be “I am proud of myself for trying. That took courage.”

Say, “I don’t” Instead of “I can’t”

Moreover, the phrase, “I can’t,” communicates constraint. On the contrary, the phrase “I don’t,” demonstrates that you are in charge of your thoughts. For instance, “I can’t buy these trousers until payday,” against, “I don’t buy trousers until payday.”

Meditate more Often

Indeed, meditation enhances your inner eyes and helps you see the contents of your mind and heart to understand the way you construct the world and the pain with greater clarity, compassion, and acceptance. As such, meditation improves your power of better self-talk.
