The beautiful and outstanding Sharlene Opande who doubles as a medical student and make up artist takes us through her journey.
What inspired you to be a make-up artist?
Make-up simply brings me joy. Initially, I never intended to be a make-up artist. I just started experimenting with diverse styles and obsessively watched tutorials and within no time, I was totally hooked. Nonetheless, it took a while to actually use the term make-up artist to describe myself since I never saw myself in that light; rather, simply as someone who loved make-up and trying new things with it.
What are some of the most important qualities that a make-up artist should possess?
The first quality is humility since it creates room for you to learn and to be able to take criticism without becoming offended. Second, patience is essential since sometimes the client may not be prepared as agreed or, when handling certain personalities who are difficult to work with. Third, you should be a great listener so you can produce what your client wants.
How do you stay up to date with the latest beauty trends?
I do my research on Pinterest , Instagram and YouTube.
What is your favorite celebrity make-up look? And why?
Most, if not all, of Yara Shahidi’s looks. Her looks are simple and do not take away her natural beauty. Simplicity is beautiful to me.
When did you begin your journey of the make-up artistry craft?
Well my make-up journey began in 2014 but I started taking it seriously around 2018.
What are some of the best moments in make-up artistry?
My personal best moments are when I work on first timers (people who have never worn make up), and when they see themselves and come to a new appreciation of makeup. It is in that moment that you realize you have a new member in the make-up tribe lol.
What are some of the common beauty mistakes that women make?
Not taking care of their skin and believing that make up will be able to hide the effects. Skin care is a must and people should not ignore it since it makes your make-up appear a million times better.
What is one product you cannot work without?
Bronzer, I love the warmth it brings into the face.
What is the most important beauty advice you can share to women?
Do not allow society to define your standard of beauty. You are wonderfully and beautifully made regardless of others opinions of your beauty. Stand in your truth and let it be the reality you walk in.
What are some of the challenges you are facing as a make-up artist during COVID?
Most events were cancelled during this pandemic so the opportunities and need of make-up artists are limited.
Inspirational words to the women and girls aspiring to be a makeup artist?
Do not compare yourself to anyone. Easier said than done, you should realize there is only one of you and only you are able to create the way you do since God does not create duplicates.
