Major Trends at the South Africa Fashion Week 2019

2019 marked the 22nd anniversary of the South Africa Fashion Week summer/spring collection. The organizers celebrated 22 years of working with local designers, and providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and skills to the world.  This year’s event demonstrated that the Fashion Week gets better each year, especially since designers are always tasked with the challenge of innovating new styles and trends.

Here are the five major trends that stood out for us;

Belt it out

Design by Clive Rundle, Spring/Summer 2019 collection.

One of the greatest trends at the event included oversized shirts, jumpsuit, and blazers that were cut off and clinched on the waist by fabric and leather belts. Moreover, designs that had built-in belts stood out.

 Pleat and ruffles

During this year’s Summer/spring 2019 collection we witnessed pleat and ruffles on a whole other level. Designers included them on skirts as it is a pretty noticeable trend that has made a comeback from the 90’s.

Hats

During this year’s South African Fashion Week, the designers displayed less rigid bucket hats and fisherman  in almost every collection. Therefore,  it has officially made them a new staple for every closet this season.

Relaxed cut out pieces made for an easy and cool look at the South African Fashion Week. The major success of rocking this look from the summer/spring collection 2019 is layering separates in a single color while watching out for proportionality.

Single Color Columns

Designs by: Amanda Laird Cherry Spring/Summer 2019 collection, and Mmuso Maxwell Spring/Summer 2019 collection.

The impact of monotone color made a great impact in the summer/spring collection of 2019. It is strikingly elegant, figure-flattering, and eye catchy. Wearing this single color makes one appear taller!
