Contour and highlight makeup is the latest trend in the beauty industry around the world. It enables you to create higher cheekbones and more defined jawlines for naturally sculpted looks. Additionally, it can help your nose to appear slimmer, forehead to seem smaller and cheekbones to look sharper without going through surgery. However, before contouring, you should know and understand your face shape.
Different Face Shapes
There are nine common face shapes which include circle, square, heart-shaped, inverted triangle, diamond, triangle, oblong, rectangular, and oval.
Heart-Shaped and Inverted Triangle
The Heart-Shaped and Inverted Triangle face shape is typically wide at the forehead and slim at the chin. It brings so much focus on your forehead than other parts of the face. Therefore, you will need to highlight under your eyes so that your cheeks become more pronounced. The highlight will help take away attention from your forehead. Note that it is important to contour the sides of your forehead and cheeks to give you a slimmer face.
People with the round face shape have cheeks and forehead of the same width, thus making their cheeks appears prominent. In such cases, you will have to contour your Temples, Cheekbones and the sides of the jaw to provide you with more definition. You can give your face a more angular shape by highlighting your chin and forehead.
The oval face shape is long and slim. In this case, you will need to highlight your forehead, chin and under your eyes to bring important areas of your face into focus and make them prominent.
Oblong or Rectangular
The Oblong or Rectangularface involves a similar shape of the forehead and the lower face and long sides. You can contour the corners of your face to make it look slim, angular and provide it with a softer edge. Afterward, you should highlight your forehead and chin to give your face some dimension.
The triangular face is characterized by a wide forehead and narrow jawline and chin. You should contour the sides of your face to slim it down and highlight your chin to draw attention to it.
Note: Using the same makeup color family in lighter and darker shades while doing your contour and makeup will produce the best contouring results. The darker shade decreases the face features while lighter shades make them noticeable.
